Integra South East (Portsmouth) supplies enough electricity for around 20,600 local homes
Integra South East (Portsmouth) is the only inner-city facility in Hampshire. It is situated on an industrial site in the city. The design of the building has been created to reflect this. The ERF is also situated next door to the Portsmouth MRF.
The plant has been fully operational since spring 2005, processes non-recyclable household waste and supplies up to 14MWs of electricity to the National Grid, which is enough for around 20,600 local homes.
In 2006 the Portsmouth Energy Recovery Facility was presented with a Design Award by the Portsmouth Civic Society. Following this, the site came to national attention, and was featured in BBC2's Culture Show, in a segment named "The Unsung Heroes of Architecture". The ERF also gained the Edmund Hambly Medal from the Institute of Civil Engineering. This prestigious prize is awarded for creative design in an engineering project that makes a substantial contribution to "sustainable development". The committee of judges also look for projects which display a high degree of innovation and imagination.
