Tour guides were on hand to explain how the facility works day and night, processing waste and producing enough electricity to power over 10,000 local homes.
Facility Manager, Andy Macqueen of Veolia Environmental Services said:
“It was great to welcome 80 of our neighbours in to show then what happens here. We’ve even got a video link to inside the furnace. Children and grown-ups asked loads of questions about recycling and waste and had great fun exploring!”
Chineham Energy Recovery Facility is part of the Project Integra network of waste management infrastructure, designed to handle Hampshire’s household waste and recycling. In Hampshire just 10% of our waste is sent to landfill – topping the league tables for waste diverted from landfill. Chineham uses non-recyclable waste as a fuel, to generate electricity in the same way as a power station uses fossil fuels.
