Volunteers and service users eagerly watched as the Veolia staff assembled a shed in their sensory garden and planted up flower beds with fragrant lavender which the company provided as part of a £900 donation to the Horizon User Group.
The Horizon Centre is Portsmouth’s main centre for rehabilitation and occupational therapies for those who have physical disabilities or are recovering from a stroke. It provides respite care and re-enablement programmes to provide disabled people with the resources to live more independently. The Horizon User Group has been working to develop the sensory garden where service users can sit quietly, chat with friends and receive rehabilitation treatment. As part of the project new pathways have been laid, extra seating has been provided and physiotherapy areas developed to assist with rehabilitation at the centre.
Veolia Environmental Services provided a £900 donation which the charity spent on a new water feature and shed to store equipment in, and volunteered their staff to erect the shed and help out in the garden.
Martin Stanley, Chair of the Horizon User Group said “Veolia Environmental Services have been brilliant, not only have they provided a donation to help pay for things like the new shed and water feature, but also sent a team of staff to come and help out. Because we are disabled we need able bodied people to help out with manual jobs like putting up the shed, and they’ve done a great job.”
The staff who came to help out in the garden were from the company’s sites in Quatremaine Road where the company has Materials and Energy Recovery Facilities. Volunteer Wayne Rimmer said: “I’ve really enjoyed the day, and it’s good to support good causes like this, especially as a member of my family has been helped by the Horizon Centre.”
