Veolia has already sent in heavy lifting equipment to pick up the largest items from the beach, including flotsam and jetsam such as industrial-size tyres. Over three days, teams of staff will be on the beaches picking up the rest of litter that has accumulated over years.
Richard Johnson, Projects Director for Veolia, said: “As a team, we are looking forward to making a difference in our local area. These beaches are the poor relation compared to other parts of the Portsmouth coastline, with so much debris piled up. The area will be much tidier and improve the look of our coast.”
Staff will be working in the mornings, to avoid the high tides, in teams of 11-12 people over three days. Veolia employees all have an allowance for paid volunteering time, which supports the company’s corporate responsibility aims. Veolia Environmental Services recently gained a silver rating in the Business in the Community Corporate Responsibility Index. Our parent company Veolia Environnement was also selected to be in the FTSE4Good and Ethibel Sustainability indexes.
