Hart District Council has moved from an in-house collection to the joint venture whilst Basingstoke and Deane has extended its contract with Veolia that it has held for the past seven years. The deal follows three years of discussions in which the two councils have worked together to get the best deal for their residents.
One of the main changes to the scheme will be in Basingstoke and Deane where a phased roll out program of kerbside glass collection is planned. The new agreement will see Hart maintain its fortnightly household waste collection and Basingstoke and Deane’s weekly collection.
Ian Williams, Regional Director, Veolia Environmental Services said: “Different areas have different waste challenges but we are pleased to be able to provide a joint solution that suits both Hart and Basingstoke and Deane Councils. We anticipate investment into new vehicles to help provide the most efficient service to residents across the area.”
Basingstoke and Deane’s cabinet member for environment, Cllr Elaine Still said: “This is a great opportunity to build on a strong partnership with Veolia that has led to high levels of resident satisfaction with the service.
“Through the contract we have reconfirmed our commitment to weekly waste collections for our residents and been able to bring in new initiatives to drive up recycling and drive down costs.”
Hart’s cabinet member for environment, Councillor Stephen Parker said: “Our staff have done a stunning job over the years but financial pressures have led us to explore different options.”
“Our existing collection crews will be joining Veolia under the TUPE regulations and we are confident that with Veolia’s quality standards combined with our existing crews’ pride in their work a quality service will be delivered to residents of both authorities.”
